The Byzantine Varangian Guard were Nordic soldiers. There are Viking runes still visible in the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

Re: The KUMB Ancient History Corner
That could explain the gingers then.
I worked with a fair few Turkish on the ships. One girl, whose dad was a well known actor there, was a stunning tall blonde who looked like a Scandinavian Princess.
Slightly changing subjects but the Vikings pretty much influenced the modern world, didn't they? Aren't many of the European Royal Families descended from them? Russia is named after them. The whole coastline of Europe from the Baltic States to Portugal plus chunks of southern Spain and much of north Africa were part of the Viking empire.

Re: The KUMB Ancient History Corner
Getting back to the original subject of the Battle of Hastings, I was at a wedding last night which took place at Battle Abbey, Battle in Sussex. I got talking to the groom who I've known for years and who has always been interested in the Battle of Hastings (I say "interested" more like obsessed) and he was saying to me that he and a lot of others believe that the battle didn't actually take place on the site of Battle Abbey at all but took place at a site called Caldbec Hill, further down the road. There's evidence to back this up, including an archaeological dig that took place by the Time Team people which produced hardly anything on the supposed site of the battle. There's a few reasons that this this is discounted, not least by English Heritage who make a fair amount of money from tourism at Battle so it will always remain controversial.

There's also that the roundabout nearby was the site of the battle, however, it is disputed too:

Quite correct.Greatest Cockney Rip Off wrote: ↑Sun Mar 26, 2023 10:52 am There's also that the roundabout nearby was the site of the battle, however, it is disputed too:
A little-known fact was that when the Normans arrived at the roundabout, they did not give way to those already on the roundabout (due to their belief in the feudal system) , which p*ssed off Harold no end. All ended up with a bit of a handbags situation, but quickly went downhill from there.
(can just be made out on the first bit of the Bayeux Tapestry, you can just make out the A21 and the roundabout in question).

Hey ho away we go , catch some pilchards , make some dough
