⚽ UCLQF1L: KAA Gent 1-1 West Ham Utd (13/4/23)
Thursday 13th April 17:45 kick off
Let's start the discussion.
On Thursday night we travel to Belgium again but this time in a repeat of our 1964 Cup Winners Cup games against KAA Gent.
They are currently 5th in their league with 16 wins, 10 losses & 6 draws with 61 goals scored & 35 against. They're currently on a four game winning streak.
In the Europa Conference they got through the last round by spanking Istanbul 1-4 away then drawing 1-1 at home.
We've been in massive form in this cup so as much as we dread each Premier League game we look forward to this fixture.
I think Moyes will go with...
Areola
Kehrer Zouma Aguerd Emerson
Downes Rice
Bowen Lanzini Benrahma
Antonio
With Mubama coming on after an hour if we're ahead.
I am predicting a comfortable 0-2 win.

Re: FAA Gent v West Ham United: Match Thread
Their rate of goals scored to date is so much better than ours (in the respective leagues).
I doubt that we can keep them out AND score twice, but have a feeling that, over the two legs, we will prevail.
Would definitely be playing one or both of Manu and Fornals for ball retention.
Reckon we played Og today so that he had a run out before featuring again on Thurs.
Hope to also see Johnson get a game.

Re: FAA Gent v West Ham United: Match Thread
If today’s team is anything to go by it appears Moyes is going to be mimicking what he did earlier in the season when the regulars of last season will be playing in the league and the newbies will be playing more in this competition.
I certainly expect at the very least Areola, Aguerd and Emerson to play. And possibly at least one of Paquetá, Downes and Cornet.
Need to try and at least get a draw there if possible, and then beat them at home. But if we can grind out a win there, even better.
Personally I think we’ll beat this mob over both ties. But unfortunately I think we’ll lose to AZ Alkmaar.

Good.
They've been scoring for fun lately.
It's nice they've decided to stoop to our level before playing us...

Praying we can get a good result here. Get the enthusiasm back for this competition.
Defo think Lanzini should play.

What do you mean never? We've won two of the last thirty one games. That's almost a 6% success rate

Had to check..!
Drew 1=1 against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, (yeah, me neither), at home after getting a pen in the 80th minute.
We'll be grand...

Re: FAA Gent v West Ham United: Match Thread
Not to be pedantic but isn’t it KAA Gent?
I think this is far from the forgone conclusion some seem to think. It’s hard but not impossible to play like **** every week then turn it on in Europe. I’m skeptical

Quite, I think this will be a much tougher test than we all seem to have in mind.

Saint-Gilloise are the side that could have an impact on whether we play a potential semi final 2nd leg against Anderlecht at home or away.DublinDave wrote: ↑Sat Apr 08, 2023 9:37 pm

They are 2nd in the league, 14 points ahead of Gent.

Re: KAA Gent v West Ham United: Match Thread
Moyes normally plays a back 3 in Europe.
This lot have some big lads (incl an ex-Huddersfield striker) and the two up front - Orban and Cuypers have been prolific. One of their defenders was actually linked to us IIRC.
That said, 6-1 on aggregate should be a target based on them getting turned over home and away by Omonia Nicosia and Djurgardens.
Pick a team to win this one. It's more important than Arsenal.

Hard game I reckon, I hope we don't get complacent, we have no right to be beating anyone in any competition.
I reckon we nick a 2-1 win
