It's grim up Norf

To me if you look at a map of England a rough guide would be
A simplistic version

The North - upwards from Lincoln which is in line approximately with Chester

The Midlands - downward from Lincoln to approximately Northampton roughly in line with Worcester

Norfolk & Suffolk are anomalies just East Anglia , not northern or midlands but strangely more southern related

The South - from Cambridge down to the coast and across to Swindon

West Country - Swindon across to Cornwall , but still South ultimately

It was over 40 years ago and it was Yorkshire not Lancashire - it's possible that the term went out of fashion with all t'incomers buying up t'cheap properties in t'village .

Wow. I've lived in Cambridge for 66 years and it turns out I'm a northerner. Who knew? I can enjoy gravy on my chips without feeling dirty anymore.

I’d only have eaten gravy on chips if it was with a meat filled pie. I’d want sausage with egg and beans / peas. I converted to vegetarianism last year so I’ve not had the brown stuff for a long time.

I remember it when I was a kid. But it did go once, twice, three times, for times etc.

Think it died out here when exotic things like sausage and pies started appearing and then when the chippy was also the Chinese takeaway.

Horsforth is very Hyacinth Bucket country so maybe they didn't allow the Chinese in.

I've lived in Lincolnshire for about 5-6 years now & i really don't know. Not even sure which region we are, not really East or East Midlands.
We get "Look North" news on the TV, but it's mainly Yorkshire news

There's a road sign on the A1 at Angel that points the way to "The North" so I assume everywhere north of Islington is "The North".

In English teaching there are pronunciation books called 'Ship or Sheep' and 'Tree or Three'.

You could localise this to the British Isles with the linguistic division '****' or '*****', and see where the line is drawn. I think it's the Midlands, but maybe excluding Birmngham and (I think) the whole of Wales as using '****'.

'The North', Scotland and Ireland speak for themselves.

Without a phonemic keyboard this won't make any sense when I post it, but you might see what I mean by proposing it as a linguistic/social marker.

I'm talking excrement.
