Is that city on the dividing line Cambridge? Who in their right mind considers that to be in the North?

Re: It's grim up Norf
I find it hard to think of much of the West as southern... ie Cornwall, Somerset, Worcestershire.
I'm from Lancashire so I like to think I'm proper northern... I live in the East Midlands these days which I guess could be considered northern but I see it more as northern-lite. A watered down version of northern.
Norfolk is neither. It's full of strange people from another planet.

I think that, when people mention 'up north' the first places that come to most peoples mind are Lancashire and Yorkshire. I think that was certainly the case with the KLF....

I'd say the line's somewhere around Haywards Heath. All scumlords beyond there.

Spare a thought for Bishop's Stortford FC
After their promotion this year, they have been put in the Conference North division!

A lot of people believe it's a diagonal line rather than a straight line.

Lincolnshire is another one that I struggle to think of as being either northern or southern.

The correct answer is The Thames.
Anyone from north of the Thames is basically a ****ing Jock.
And that's official.

Re: It's grim up Norf
Back in the days when fishing rod licences were regional I had to have two, a North West one for some of the waters and a Severn/Trent one (IIRC) for some others. I'm in Crewe so based on that the north starts here somewhere.
Edit To Clarify, therefore, Chester is in the North and Stoke is in the South(enjoy )

No, no, BH - it's clearly a watered down version of the south.Burnley Hammer wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 4:24 pmI'm from Lancashire so I like to think I'm proper northern... FWIW, I'd have had Brum on the southern side of the border.

Re: It's grim up Norf
It's confusing where I am. People say I am going down to the Bridge, which is in the north. I battled hard with the locals for a few years, but in the end I had to give in.
In the UK I personally think a line just below Luton deliniates north from south. I am not having that **** hole bring down the good name of southerners.

You can’t seriously consider Cornwall in the north? They’re a funny bunch of peninsula dwelling celts, but certainly not northern.Burnley Hammer wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 4:24 pm I find it hard to think of much of the West as southern... ie Cornwall, Somerset, Worcestershire.
I’m happy to draw the line at north of the M4. That way we can disown Swindon.

Re: It's grim up Norf
I guess it depends where exactly in East Midlands. Lincoln may be southern-lite I guess. I can see that. Derby however, I definitely see as more northern. Same with Nottingham. Leicester and Northampton are places I struggle to associate with either.Up the Junction wrote: ↑Wed May 17, 2023 5:57 pm No, no, BH - it's clearly a watered down version of the south.

Re: It's grim up Norf
Starts the the junction of Marshgate Lane/Waterden Road. Ends at Hadrians Wall. No man, nor beast has ventured beyond there into the desolate wasteland that lies beyond and has lived to tell the tale. I imagine it’s inhabited by hordes of Neanderthal like beings, violent, untamed and uncivilised, roaming the toxic wastelands armed with rudimentary weapons.

Re: It's grim up Norf
I always thought the dividing line was the Watford Gap i.e a few miles north of Northampton,.
