Is he jinxed?

Can't understand why Moyes didn't call Downes back from his loan.

With great regret I think you're correct. I hate the fact that it's gone so wrong for him but I wouldn't even bench him again. His confidence looks shot to pieces.

Phillips did nothing wrong when he came on. Fact is, he was the person who was wronged by the referee and the morons in VAR and should be getting defended rather than slagged off.

I think his defending of the last goal is the bigger mistake

I know he had a tough upbringing, seems a nice lad and has shown human emotions.

However, he is one of the worst players I have seen play for West Ham. Don't care if he's a Manchester City star or whatever, he's not a PL player now.
Carlos Sanchez could only dream of costing us points every time he stepped on the pitch, this one does it with ease.

Should have stuck his foot through the ball instead of taking a touch imo. Huge mistake right there.

He was too slow, should have cleared it earlier, and he was walking back not even trying to defend against Barnes or the rest of the Newcastle midfield for the winner. He is both $hit and cursed. He has given away 2 direct goals, 2 penalties and his lack of pace /application/effort has cost us another 2 more - 6 goals and a minimum of 6 points, more realistically 8… and he has only played 360 minutes. He is completely finished as a top flight footballer.

Only if you take the harshest view of every tiny error. For example, at least one of the goals was due to a suicide pass putting him in a very bad position. Today, maybe he could have done better with the second, but it was a fast breakaway and a pinpoint pass, much like Paqueta's earlier for our goal. The penalty decision totally changed the outcome of the game and it was a foul of on Phillips or a 50/50 no decision at best and yet the referee and the morons in the video portacabin decide to make it a penalty.

Could you imagine the insanity of having had the perfect opportunity to "try before you buy" that we then decide to give £40m+ for this bloke in the summer :shocker:

First of all it was never a penalty in a million years

Half way through clearing the ball Gordon stick his leg in front of him, if anything a foul on Phillips for anyone that's played football.

The biggest problem he has is he is always brought on on for the wrong player, if it had been Fornals or Lanzini if still here for Antonio it would have been equally as wrong.

Today if you were bringing on Phillips then it should have been for Soucek or JWP, that's the massive problem.

Realistically, it's Soucek but with Moyes that ain't happening and it's messing up the balance of the team.

The problem wasn't Phillips coming on, it was Antonio coming off

Very unlucky for the penalty, which shouldn't have been given. But too slow and casual for the winner.

I had high hopes that he could come in and replace Soucek in the starting 11, making us a better footballing side. Crazy in hindsight I admit

When Moyes started that historically poor midfield combination of Soucek and JWP I thought ‘wow Phillips must look horrendous in training’. His cameo probably backs that up

I think the penalty was an awful decision personally. Ignoring that though he just might as well have been another training cone out there like JWP and Soucek. All so easily passed around. Soucek at least defends well when he’s on the edge of or in his own box. The other two have no fight or personality.

On page 3 of this thread I asked what the loan fee was.
Still don't know the answer, what I do know is we are getting more bang for our buck out of baroness effing Brady than we are getting out of KP.
By comparison Danny Ings is looking better value for money spent than our outlay on Alan Devonshire.

Yea, but we don't have a like-for-like replacement, so you shuffle the system. We were already under the cosh before Phillips came on and it made sense to try and tighten things up at that time.

Why change a working system unless you have to, there was no need for the sub

Mubama for Antonio IF he was injured/knackered

If you want to bring Phillips on then it's for Soucek or JWP

Every time we mess with systems it doesn't work

Have to agree, as we were in control.. pretty much. No need for any change (unless it was like for or like).

Because we need to protect Antonio. There are much more important games coming up where he could be a key player.

And it has worked in the past, like when Paqueta was switched to false nine. Howe actually got lucky as he only brought Barnes on due to injury to another sub!
