If we actually want him in the summer and the price is the same, it’s inexcusable that we didn’t do it in January.

Wasn't the rumour that the Agent fee effectively doubled that price?

Then of course he may not have wanted the move.

No interest from the player in leaving Stuttgart.

So we made a transfer profit in the summer and another one in January. I can understand letting Benrahma and Fornals leave as they both wanted to go. Cornet will get a chance to play left wing, and if and when Antonio gets fit he can play there, as he seems to hang out there when he’s supposed to be playing centre forward. I also understand the reasons for bringing in Phillips, but he’s well off the pace at the moment.
My biggest concern is that we have left ourselves a mountain to climb in the summer.
We will definitely need a left back, at least one centre back, probably two and possibly three. We will also need at least one centre forward, possibly two, and at least one left sided forward, possibly two, and possibly a right back, central/ defensive midfielder and a keeper. That is a minimum of 4 players and possibly as many as 10

Thank god for that.

We shouldn't be looking to emulate Brighton or Brentford, we're trying to catch and surpass Spurs and Arsenal.

fwiw, there was a link to Odobert, the Burnley lad, the other day.

We're hilarious.

Chase Osman all January. Let Brighton get him cheaper than we allegedly bid.

We're trying to surpass Spurs and Arsenal in the way I'm trying to bang Cameron Diaz.

Weird take. How are we going to catch arsenal and spurs? We can't match their spending and just buy the best players available every window - they've both spent £150m plus net over the 2 windows.

The only way we stand to compete long term is to spot future stars early rather than paying over the odds for them ready made.

How have they made a bid, agreed on a signing and done a medical outside of the transfer window?

You can agree a transfer at any time. It will go through when the summer window opens.

It wasn't that long ago on here the place was awash with people who thought a 'nice midtable finish" was the height of aspiration.

Now look. Europe almost every year. Trophy in the cabinet.

Keep pushing.

Can sign players when you want, someone needs to tell David Sullivan.

They clearly didn’t want to miss out to us on Osman as well as Kudus so they’ve made their move.

It’ll be an interesting one to watch to see whether our dallying has cost us.

Something we should be doing now. So much work to do in the summer we could do with getting some things done early.

On Osman, if we really wanted him, and it looked like we did, then why didn't we match Brighton's offer and try to get it done for 1st July? Seems odd to me that we were prepared to invest in him in January but equally prepared to walk away over a couple of million.

But back to the summer; we know Cresswell is going. We know Ogbonna is going. We know Antonio and Paqueta are probably gone. We should have targets in place for these and should be working in deals now, IMO. Who knows, maybe we are, but I'll bet a pound to a pinch of s*** that we're not and won't see our first signing until early August.

Declan Rice's emergence surely changed a lot of things in terms of outlook, but I am not sure that his emergence and path to the captaincy/permanent place in the England set up will itself guarantee repeated forays into Europe once he has settled at his new home.

Sullivan and Kretinsky's succession planning isn't as finely tuned as that, imo.
