Stevenage FC 2-2 West Ham United

Saturday, 12th July 2014
by Staff Writer

West Ham narrowly avoided an embarrassing pre-season defeat thanks to two late goals from Matt Jarvis and Stewart Downing.

Wearing the new light blue away kit for the first time, Sam Allardyce's two teams - a different XI for each half - found themselves 2-0 behind with less than 10 minutes to play after Tom Pett (31 mins) and triallist Connor Calcutt (76) had scored for the League Two side.

Even though Matt Jarvis stooped low to head home Guy Demel's 76th minute cross to reduce the deficit, it still looked as if the Hammers were heading to defeat in their openiing fixture of pre-season.

However Stewart Downing had other ideas and he was on hand to head home a deep Jarvis cross, as goalscorer turned provider deep into added-on time.

We'll have more for you from West Ham's opening game of pre-season tomorrow.
