West Ham took a massive blow in their fight against relegation, taken apart by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium in a 3-0 defeat that could have been so different.
By the end, The Hammers were soundly beaten, but a bit of luck and some better officiating could have changed things completely, with Nuno's side hitting the woodwork three times. It was not a bad performance, but sloppy moments in defence were punished on every goal, a reminder that the fragility that has haunted their season has not yet been banished.
But the margins are very fine this season, and West Ham faded dramatically in a second half that should have seen them desperately putting the pressure on their hosts to find an equaliser.
Instead, it remains just one point against Brentford since the Bees were promoted, and a big blow to the goal difference, although it was unlikely to ever be significant.
The first half was a fantastic contest of two seemingly evenly-matched sides, far more open than anybody could have expected from two sides who are not known for their attacking football.
Both were starting with the same team for the fourth time in a row, even with Brentford without a win in the Premier League since February.
But The Bees beat West Ham, it's something they have done with regularity since promotion to the top flight, and they started on the front foot. Ouattara flashed a shot just wide of the post from outside the box after just 30 seconds, a warning of their intent to get the ball forward quickly.
An end-to-end first half belied much of the anxiety and tension around the game. Where the margins mattered, it was West Ham who were lacking. They could have led after seven minutes, but Pablo never looked like scoring after pouncing on a loose ball in the Brentford defence.
Pushing forward after the defender misread the ball, the striker looked to be set to drive at goal and release, but he never composed himself. Instead, he carried into the box and ignored passing options and the space he had to shoot until it was too late and van den Berg had recovered to challenge Pablo as his tame effort bobbled to Kelleher.
Brentford carried threat with Kayode's huge long throws into the box, but it was slack defending from a cross that gave the home side the lead after 15 minutes.
Both Bowen and Diouf should reflect on two bits of poor defending. It was the captain who allowed Lewis-Potter to turn inside too easily and deliver a cross without much pressure from the left. It flew to the far post, and Diouf made the decision to jump against Thiago, already marked by Disasi, rather than reading the flight of a ball he was in a good position to head clear.
It beat the left back, and it was Brentford's right back flying forward who challenged with Summerville. It ricocheted off them and against the West Ham post, before flicking the leg of Hermansen to roll it into the middle of goal, a couple yards out.
Mavropanos slid in to challenge, winning the ball but putting it into his own net in beating Kayode to it. But Kayode's challenge was a clear foul, leaving his studs on Mavropanos's outstretched leg, making no contact with the ball. It was a simple decision, in reality, for VAR. And it was one of many simple decisions that the VAR officials felt West Ham should not be allowed in the game.
The Hammers nearly drew level almost instantly, a Diouf cross into the box controlled wonderfully by Castellanos, who had a bit of space inside the box. He curled it around the defender in front of him and had Kelleher beaten, but his effort slapped the face of the post and bounced away.
They thought they'd got back into it a few minutes later as Diouf delivered a perfect cross from a freekick on the left, curling it beautifully behind the Brentford line stood on the edge of the box. Mavropanos met it at the back post and powered a header home, only for the VAR replays to show his shoulder was in an offside position.
And then it was Brentford's turn to waste a golden opportunity. A long ball behind the defence was bouncing through, and Hermansen decided to come deal with it. It was far from convincing, the goalkeeper leaping high to head the ball away into midfield, but colliding with his centre back in doing so.
He fell to the ground as Damsgaard controlled and looked up to see chaos and a downed goalkeeper. He stayed composed, taking it forward and rounding a desperate challenge from Hermansen, but with a defender on the line, the midfielder tried to be too accurate, aiming for the bottom corner from the edge of the area and putting it wide.
The breathless pace continued, a great counter attack from the hosts leading to Thiago through on goal and in the West Ham penalty area, but the Brazilian tried to dink it over Hermansen, who stood his ground and caught it comfortably.
Straight up the other end, West Ham won a corner and Bowen curled it in. Castellanos was up at the front post and glanced it across goal exactly as he'd have hoped, only to see it smack the inside of the post and be cleared to safety. It already felt like one of those days.
Unfortunately, it was about all the captain was contributing, two weak efforts in decent positions a reflection of the threat on goal he has carried recently.
Hermansen was the hero at the other end, Brentford moving the ball around to get Jensen space outside the box. He smartly chipped a cute cross to the back post, where Lewis-Potter had run forward unmarked. From a tight angle, six yards out, the full back headed at goal, but the Danish goalkeeper had flown at him, making himself big and got rewarded for it, blocking the effort with his body.
Van den Berg should have doubled the lead, missing a good header from eight yards out in the centre of goal, glancing it wide, and Diouf and Summerville both wasted good moments.
But it was Castellanos really making things happen. The striker unleashed a great effort from 30 yards that Kelleher was at full stretch to save. He met a corner that followed at the back post, and had a free header as the defender slipped, but could only head wide as he met it a little behind him.
The Hammers have taken one point from the now 11 games where they've been behind at the break, and considering how poor they were in the second half, it is no surprise.
That said, it was only a one-goal deficit, and without some outright stupidity from Diouf, they may have found their way back into it.
But the Senegalese left back showed his inexperience at a crucial moment. Ouattara, who has performed well against West Ham this season, twisted and turned, and created space to drive from the wing and towards both the area and the byline.
Diouf threw himself down, sliding with his whole body at the ball, and missing it completely as the winger got a touch first and was sent flying by the defender. Thiago sent Hermansen the wrong way, watching the goalkeeper well as he stuttered in his run-up and Hermansen moved early.
When Soucek was denied a penalty after being hauled down at the far post as a corner came in, frustration started to boil over. The midfielder was unlikely to get to the ball, but he was given no chance by the Lewis-Potter who never looked at the ball as he dragged Soucek to the deck.
Castellanos and Summerville were both booked for lunging challenges, and Nuno turned to his bench. It was a surprise to see the Argentine removed, the striker had been the major threat for his side and was unlucky not to have scored. But he was replaced, he and Walker-Peters off for Wilson and Wan-Bissaka.
It didn't improve the team. Another 10 minutes later, Traore replaced Diouf and the side shifted to a back three. Minutes later, Summerville beat two and opened his body up to curl at goal from the edge of the box, only to see his effort bounce down off the underside of the bar.
Pablo got onto the loose ball and was scythed down by Jensen, but for some reason it was waved away. This one was completely baffling, the midfielder falling over and sliding into the striker to take him down, but it appeared that the officials decided an accident could not be punished.
With the woodwork struck three times and two clear penalties turned down, heads went down. Five minutes later, it was 3-0.
A Brentford counter was just far too easy, with no pressure on any of the players breaking forward. Jensen was found in acres of space down the right, and had time to cross. It was a poor cross, but when Lewis-Potter struggled to control and went from the area to the wing, he was barely followed by Wan-Bissaka, who seemed to be looking for Traore to get back.
Lewis-Potter had the time to roll it to Damsgaard in the box, and he passed it through the legs of Fernandes and into the far bottom corner, beating Hermansen and securing all three points for Brentford with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Bowen and Summerville soon came off, protecting them from any possibility of injury with the game dead.
The Hammers will now have to spend their Sunday with a nervous eye on events at Villa Park, where a Tottenham win would push West Ham back into the relegation zone, a point ahead of Nuno's side ahead of a game against Arsenal.
Manager's Rating
Nuno Espirito Santo 6/10: On another day, his team may have got something, but he left them to falter in the second half and his eventual changes didn't work.
