Caldwell saw red after appearing to stamp on West Ham's Luke Chadwick, despite later protesting his innocence, and his dismissal proved to be the turning point as West Ham took control of the game in the second period.
Marlon Harewood - playing despite suffering from a migraine - opened the scoring for the Hammers on 59 minutes. A breaking Sergei Rebrov fed Chadwick on the right flank, who gave Harewood the easiest of opportunities with a low cross which the former Forest striker converted from six yards.
The score remained at 1-0 until the fourth minute of injury time when the Hammers once again profited on the break. Steve Lomas released Bobby Zamora through the centre; the striker's run took him wide of the goal but he unselfishly centred for the returning Teddy Sheringham to score his first goal since registering against Stoke in mid-October.
The Hammers were rarely troubled by a side favourites for the Championship and led by former Hammer Gary Breen, who took some inevitable stick from the travelling faithful.
The win lifts the Hammers back into fifth spot, just six points behind leaders Ipswich.
A much-relieved Alan Pardew said after the game:
"A lot of criticism has come my way and towards the club and the team. There's been a lot of frustration and we've had to take some kicks in this bad run.
"The Chairman's been unhappy, I've been unhappy and so have the supporters. But we've accepted the criticism and got on with it.
"That's what you have to do - you must be big at these times and now we are handily placed."
