Joe Cole was one of the most promising young players to emerge from the West Ham Academy during the 1990s. Having briefly lit up the Boleyn Ground with his talent, relegation at the end of the 2002/03 season saw him move to Chelsea for ??6million.
Nearly a decade after having left West Ham, Sam Allardyce brought Cole back to his spiritual home, to the delight of many Hammers fans. He made his second debut in the FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United in which he created both of West Ham's goals.

West Bromwich Albion
0-1: Saturday, 26th AprilReplaced Downing. Should have replaced Nolan. Maybe he could have created something in the middle; no longer has the pace to play as a winger, though he'll try...
Crystal Palace
0-1: Saturday, 19th AprilOnly had a quarter of an hour, but looked lively and had a half-chance or two.
Arsenal
1-3: Tuesday, 15th AprilA quarter of an hour is no time at all to influence a game at the Emirates.
Liverpool
1-2: Sunday, 6th AprilDid not play.
Sunderland
2-1: Monday, 31st MarchDid not play.
Hull City
2-1: Wednesday, 26th MarchLooked lively and energetic for 20 minutes, but with the team playing so poorly, was unable to have much impact.
Southampton
3-1: Saturday, 22nd FebruaryDid not play.

3-1: Saturday, 22nd FebruaryDid not play.
Fulham
1-2: Wednesday, 1st JanuaryDid not play.
Tottenham Hotspur
2-1: Wednesday, 18th DecemberWas mostly on the backfoot - not a lot of threat.
Tottenham Hotspur
2-1: Wednesday, 18th DecemberThe one sour note on a great night. Dreadful passing and looked completely out of sorts.
Sunderland
0-0: Saturday, 14th DecemberWithout my rose-tinted JC specs on, nothing really of note today.
Sunderland
0-0: Saturday, 14th DecemberDidn't influence proceedings at all I'm afraid.
Liverpool
1-4: Saturday, 7th DecemberAnother up against his former employers. Did little to suggest they'd made a mistake by selling him.
Crystal Palace
0-1: Tuesday, 3rd DecemberFew chances again for him.
Crystal Palace
0-1: Tuesday, 3rd DecemberBarely involved; his best moments came when cutting inside rather than exploiting the flank.
Chelsea
0-3: Saturday, 23rd NovemberHad one (blocked) shot but failed to make any significant contribution up to the point he was replaced.
Chelsea
0-3: Saturday, 23rd NovemberTaken off after just 40 minutes.
Norwich City
1-3: Saturday, 9th NovemberWoefully out of sorts and very lucky to stay on as long as he did.
Aston Villa
0-0: Saturday, 2nd NovemberPretty insipid unfortunately. Failed to pick up the frenetic pace of the game, and ended up slowing the game down making us look less effective. A good player to bring on if we’re winning or holding onto a point as he keeps the ball well, but never really looked like unlocking the defence.
Aston Villa
0-0: Saturday, 2nd NovemberFailed to exert any influence.
Aston Villa
0-0: Saturday, 2nd NovemberPlayed some good football but needs more game time.
Swansea City
0-0: Sunday, 27th OctoberA couple of lively bursts and rightly not penalised for a ridiculous penalty appeal in injury time.
Manchester City
1-3: Saturday, 19th OctoberDid not play.
Tottenham Hotspur
3-0: Sunday, 6th OctoberA welcome return for Joe, who managed a couple of bursts in his short showing.
Cheltenham Town
2-1: Tuesday, 27th AugustIf any player on the pitch needs a game to flow it’s probably Joe so the numerous stoppages did him few favours.
Newcastle United
0-0: Saturday, 24th AugustA busy performance. Could have won it at the death.
Cardiff City
2-0: Saturday, 17th AugustFine finish for his goal. Could possibly have added another one or two. Less influential in the second half.

Reading
4-2: Sunday, 19th MayFlitted in and out of a game that he would have dominated not so long ago.
Everton
0-2: Sunday, 12th MayComments to follow...
Newcastle United
0-0: Saturday, 4th MayNo real influence on proceedings – though I expect he’d have appreciated longer than seven minutes in which to have tried.
Manchester City
1-2: Saturday, 27th AprilDid not play.
Wigan Athletic
2-0: Saturday, 20th April(Replaced Demel, 61)
Looked a little ring rusty after his recent absence.
Tottenham Hotspur
2-3: Monday, 25th FebruaryWell taken goal and got through a lot of running. Booked while Dembele got away with murder.
Swansea City
1-0: Saturday, 2nd February(Replaced Jarvis, 62)
A quiet half hour or so but nearly provided the second for RVT.
Queens Park Rangers
1-1: Saturday, 19th JanuaryNice bit of poaching for the goal. Beginning to influence matches but it’s still early days.
Manchester United
2-2: Saturday, 5th JanuarySplendid return. Quietly influential throughout pulling strings here, prompting there. Just goes to show exactly what a waste of a player it was sending him to a club as mediocre as Liverpool.
