A defensive midfielder by trade, Josh spent the entirely of the 2016/17 season on loan at Bradford City.
He initially signed a four-year contract in July 2014, which was superseded by a three-year pro deal signed in July 2017 - at the same time he joined Championship side Bolton on a half-season loan.
He returned to West Ham in January 2018, before spending the duration of the 2018/19 season on loan with Charlton in League One, winning the play-off final. He returned to The Valley for a second loan spell in 2019/20, which saw Athletic relegated.
Having failed to convince David Moyes he was good enough to hold down a first team squad place, Cullen joined Belgian side Anderlecht on a permanent contract on summer transfer deadline day 2020.
