Thilo Kehrer

Tübingen, Germany
Squad Number: 24
Position: Defender
Born: 21st Sep 1996 (Tübingen, Germany)
Signed: 17th Aug 2022 (£12,000,000)
Contract: 4 years + 2 year option
Previous Club: Paris St Germain

KUMB Awards: None.

The German international completed his £12million plus add-ons move to West Ham from Paris St Germain after being made surplus to requirements at Parc des Princes.

Capped more than 20 times by Germany before moving to east London, the Tubingen-born defender, who operates mainly at centre half but can also feature at full back moved to France in a €37million switch from Schalke in 2018 before sealing a move to the Premier League four years later.

vs FK TSC Backa Topola

3-1: Thursday, 21st September
(Played 90 minutes)

Lacks a real turn of pace or much guile in the final third, but passes with good tempo and accuracy. Did support attacks, a good effort on goal, too.

vs Luton Town

2-1: Friday, 1st September

Did not play.

vs Brighton & Hove Albion

3-1: Saturday, 26th August
(Played 11 minutes, sub)

(Replaced Antonio, 79) Quietly slotted into a back five.

vs Bournemouth

1-1: Saturday, 12th August
(Played 4 minutes, sub)

(Replaced Fornals, 86) Introduced to see out the final few minutes of the 90 (and that added-on time thereafter).

vs Fiorentina

2-1: Wednesday, 7th June
(Played 29 minutes, sub)

(Replaced Zouma 61') Seamlessly came in and defended well, and with composure.

vs Leicester City

1-2: Sunday, 28th May
(Played 90 minutes)

His lack of height was exposed. Thilo has cut out some of the absolute madness in his game recently, but he still should only be considered a centre back as a last resort or against very specific attacks.

vs Leeds United

3-1: Sunday, 21st May
(Played 45 minutes, sub)

(Replaced Zouma 46) Looked in complete control of his game and has really settled recently.

vs AZ Alkmaar

1-0: Thursday, 18th May
(Played 90 minutes)

Nearly, Thilo. The German has been a different player recently, defending with composure and looking finally like he has adapted to the English game. Considering the AZ threat was all about the left flank, Kehrer was excellent in nullifying Karlsson, producing two of the best challenges of the match when space did open up. It's a 9 without that back pass error, and I'm sorry, ok?

vs Brentford

0-2: Sunday, 14th May

Did not play.

vs AZ Alkmaar

2-1: Thursday, 11th May
(Played 90 minutes)

Defended well, and it was good to see him joining the attacks in the second half, although his end product clearly needs some work. Growing into this side with time.

vs Manchester United

1-0: Sunday, 7th May
(Played 90 minutes)

His best display bar none since arriving in east London. Every tackle and header was perfectly timed and he saw off the challenge of Rashford and Sancho with comparative ease. Only once did he get turned by the England international, although Rashford was going away from goal at the time. And that Delap-esque long throw is handy.

vs Manchester City

0-3: Wednesday, 3rd May
(Played 90 minutes)

One silly sliding challenge on Haaland aside - he was lucky not to give away a penalty - this was a solid showing from Kehrer.

vs Bournemouth

4-0: Sunday, 23rd April

(Replaced Coufal 83) Very easy 10 minutes.

vs Gent

4-1: Thursday, 20th April
(Played 20 minutes, sub)

(Replaced Zouma 70) As above.

vs Arsenal

2-2: Sunday, 16th April
(Played 90 minutes)

If not his best game for the club, his best game at centre back. A couple early mistakes were soon forgotten, and it?EUR(TM)s as if the level of play Arsenal aim for is just more suited to his skills, similarly to how Diop could follow a passing move then lose the ball in the air when in front of his face.

vs Fulham

1-0: Saturday, 8th April

Did not play.

vs Newcastle United

1-5: Wednesday, 5th April
(Played 90 minutes)

From the good against Southampton to looking shaky at every opportunity here.

vs Southampton

1-0: Sunday, 2nd April
(Played 90 minutes)

An assist and a good battling performance, although he was exposed horribly once and beaten easily down the channel.

vs Aston Villa

1-1: Sunday, 12th March
(Played 90 minutes)

Reasonably calm and precise with the ball, but the odd moment where he stormed forward out of position to where the ball was, but he could not get, and left space for the wide runner to use. Questions over whether he could have got out to Moreno on the cross, but it appeared he was sticking deep in those areas consistently, so it looked an error in design. It's happened to multiple right backs this season.

vs AEK Larnaca

2-0: Thursday, 9th March
(Played 90 minutes)

Relatively calm game, comfortable on the ball, unlucky to be booked late on.

vs Manchester United

1-3: Wednesday, 1st March

Did not play.

vs Nottingham Forest

4-0: Saturday, 25th February

Did not play.

vs Tottenham Hotspur

0-2: Sunday, 19th February
(Played 90 minutes)

Did a good job on Richarlison, and whilst the space Davies runs into is in that channel, he's followed his man and should be able to rely on other defenders to do the same.

vs Chelsea

1-1: Saturday, 11th February
(Played 90 minutes)

His pace is an asset, there is no doubting that, whilst being calm on the ball helps him be a good support to Coufal on the right. No notable errors, a settled position in a role that suits him.

vs Newcastle United

1-1: Saturday, 4th February
(Played 90 minutes)

Behind the line for the first goal, he's good in that right-sided slot when he's defending on the front foot, but a worry in deeper slots.

vs Derby County

2-0: Monday, 30th January
(Played 90 minutes)

The odd wobble, especially the one in our box, but otherwise calm and controlled.

vs Everton

2-0: Saturday, 21st January

Did not play.

vs Wolves

0-1: Saturday, 14th January

Did not play.

vs Brentford

1-0: Saturday, 7th January

Did not play.

vs Leeds United

2-2: Wednesday, 4th January
(Played 90 minutes)

As high as a three because he didn't actively attack his own team in the second half. Just a mess of positioning, decisions, passing, common sense.

vs Arsenal

1-3: Monday, 26th December
(Played 90 minutes)

One really good tackle was soon forgotten by a second half of woe. Always, always makes at least one big error that leads to a chance. It appears West Ham have replaced Issa Diop with Issa Diop.

vs Leicester City

0-2: Saturday, 12th November
(Played 90 minutes)

Kehrer is a really enjoyable footballer to watch. You can tell he's got good technique, there?EUR(TM)s not a lot it appears he cannot do, and he adds things to his game the more you watch him. Unfortunately, he usually adds one or two mistakes, too, but he's undoubtedly entertaining.

vs Crystal Palace

1-2: Sunday, 6th November
(Played 90 minutes)

Thilo is really interesting at the moment. He shows a little more of his game at right back with each appearance there, and there were more runs down the flank than expected. Probably should be smarter with a bad pass like Dawson's to know what he can and can't control, but it was fired at him.

vs Manchester United

0-1: Sunday, 30th October
(Played 90 minutes)

Showed more positives going forward than he has in his other right back performances, but the slack defending in his game is a huge issue. There's just obvious basic standards he is likely to fail to meet in every game.

vs Silkeborg

1-0: Thursday, 27th October
(Played 14 minutes, sub)

One major test and he failed, saved by Areola.

vs AFC Bournemouth

2-0: Monday, 24th October
(Played 90 minutes)

Struggled with Moore in the second half, the big Welsh striker pinning himself on the smaller centre back. Kehrer got aggressive and gave away fouls. But he passed nicely and defended calmly under pressure.

vs Liverpool

0-1: Wednesday, 19th October
(Played 90 minutes)

Hectic, uncontrolled and, frankly, unsuitable at centre back like this. He has been a touch rash since he first joined, but he was just messy today. With no one exactly putting up a challenge at right back, he can move back over there without fuss.

vs Southampton

1-1: Sunday, 16th October
(Played 90 minutes)

Did pretty well to manage the defence and has shown good leadership qualities very early in his West Ham career. Shouldn?EUR(TM)t have been beaten by Adams on that first-half chance, but he was probably fouled.

vs Fulham

3-1: Sunday, 9th October
(Played 90 minutes)

Quiet game, where there were moments where a lack of presence on the right was clear. Kehrer is a better passer than Coufal, and better in the team with the struggles that were clear, but doesn't cover the ground and make the movements like a natural attacking right back like Coufal does. Throws himself into some rash, rash challenges, too.

vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

2-0: Saturday, 1st October
(Played 90 minutes)

A couple moments that were less than stellar - boy does he commit to some big tackles in dangerous areas - but he was pretty good out on the right.

vs Silkeborg

3-2: Thursday, 15th September
(Played 90 minutes)

Rash and aggressive defending saw Kehrer caught out twice, one time that was punished and a second that very much should have been.

vs FCSB

3-1: Thursday, 8th September
(Played 90 minutes)

Coasted through a game where he needed to take control. Should have showed his class, but didn't.

vs Chelsea

1-2: Saturday, 3rd September
(Played 90 minutes)

That?EUR(TM)s a big, big mistake to get under that ball and miss the header. Otherwise defended well.

vs Tottenham Hotspur

1-1: Wednesday, 31st August
(Played 90 minutes)

Unfortunate with the own goal, Son gets there if he doesn?EUR(TM)t, and he managed him quite well. His passing is slick, and whilst not particularly complicated, his progressive choices are helping this team play better football.

vs Aston Villa

1-0: Sunday, 28th August
(Played 90 minutes)

Looked perfectly fit for that wide centre back role in a three, dealing with Villa?EUR(TM)s diagonals into the space behind the wing back. Then was good on the left of two centre backs, his recovery pace clearly on show and made a difference.

vs Viborg FF

3-0: Thursday, 25th August
(Played 90 minutes)

A couple of shaky moments, but otherwise a calm display. Hits his passes with a lovely weight on them. Threatened goal on crosses.

vs Brighton & Hove Albion

0-2: Sunday, 21st August
(Played 90 minutes)

Ridiculous challenge for the penalty, and then not long after he made another lunging slide tackle that was late and probably could have had him sent off, were Brighton more cynical. The positioning for the second goal is inexcusable, just fundamentally wrong and awful from a centre back.

vs Viborg FF

3-1: Thursday, 18th August

(Replaced Ogbonna 67) Looked calm in defence and on the ball, and proved quickly that he is comfortable defending and using both feet.
