Brooking: Defoe is committed

Hammers caretaker boss Trevor Brooking has backed striker Jermain Defoe to come through his current problems, claiming that he is committed to playing for West Ham.

Replying to KUMB's story yesterday in which Defoe was slammed by supporters for his lack of effort in recent games, Brooking urged those same fans to get behind the young forward - whilst denying that his mind was elsewhere.

"Jermain is committed to us this season," he said. "It has been a difficult spell but hopefully he will get a lot of goals for us in this division.

"He is only a youngster and it is all part of the learning process. As much as anything he will want to score for the club and try and get us in that promotion race so I think more than anything it is time to get behind him.

"And I'm sure the fans will get behind him and help him through the sort of spell everyone goes through."

Cynics will of course point to Brooking's use of the phrase 'this season' in his first sentence above, and perhaps suggest that the chances of even retaining Defoe's services for that long are fairly bleak bearing in mind the lack of interest shown by the player in recent weeks.
