Pardew lands Newton

Alan Pardew has signed former Wolves midfielder Shaun Newton for a nominal fee.

A report on Wolves' website tonight read:

"Shaun Newton has been transferred to West Ham.

"The midfielder - who would have been out of contract at the end of this season - has signed a short-term deal with the Hammers.

"West Ham have paid £10,000, with an agreed add-on of £115,000 if they win promotion."

The move would initially appear to be a strange one, with midfield certainly not appearing to be one of Pardew's priorities.

And with Newton recently out of favour at Molineux, fans are bound to question the decision to sign the former Charlton player.

However in recent times Newton has been playing at right-back - which means Pardew has cover for the suspended Tomas Repka.

Wolves boss Glenn Hoddle added:

"We are happy to let Shaun go for a nominal fee as he is close to the end of his contract.

"He hasn't been in the first team in recent weeks and it is better for all parties if he can get a move and be playing somewhere else.

"Shaun is a good pro and I'm sure he will do well for West Ham. We wish him all the best."
