Loudmouth Lawrenson hits out again

TV pundit Mark Lawrenson, who angered the club with his disparaging comments about Rio Ferdinand at the weekend has hit back after Harry Redknapp blasted his outburst on Monday.

Speaking in his column in the Daily Mirror today the former Liverpool player said:

"My comments on Match of the Day never disputed that he is a very good footballer but my doubts surround his ability as a defender and his defensive decision-making.

"On current form, he has got major weaknesses and, as a central defender, that's obviously a huge flaw. He must get back to basics - and that is defending first and foremost."

It's not the first time Lawrenson's comments have caused controversy. In September he suggested that Liverpool and Everton should share a ground in order to compete with Manchester United. He also angered fans of Chester City FC by claiming that Chester was 'not a footballing city', in a piece about the club's struggle for survival on the BBC's Football Focus programme.

In response to Redknapp's comments Lawrenson said:

"I respect and like Harry Redknapp and my only hope is that my comments will just raise his and Rio's awareness of a problem that must be addressed."
