The Italian job

Alan Curbishley has been talking about his weekend scouting trip to Italy.

The United boss spent a rare weekend off discussing club business with new technical director Gianluca Nani in Italy.

He revealed that he also managed to take in a couple of games during his trip - although refused to say exactly who he and Nani were eyeing.

"I went out there because we need to have dialogue," said Curbishley. "I saw three games in all in the time I was out there. I went out there Friday afternoon and was back in time for training on Sunday morning!

"It's an easy situation to get on with. Obviously we're having dialogue all the time but it's much better face to face.

"We discussed a lot of things and I got the opportunity to see players that could be on our shopping list - or not. I was looking at a couple of games. But the main purpose was to have some dialogue.

"Nani came over last week as well, he watched the reserve game then visited the training ground and met everybody. It's an ongoing situation."

The Italian formally takes up his new post with West Ham United at the beginning of June.
