Freddie Ljungberg could be back before the end of the season after an x-ray confirmed that his injury was not as bad as initially anticipated.

The Swedish international went down in agony during the latter stages of West Ham's 2-1 defeat at Sunderland last weekend prompting fears that he would be out for the rest of the season.

But a report in the Swedish media confirmed that he had not, as feared, torn a thigh muscle.

"Lungberg has gone through tests with West Ham's medical team to treat the injury," said Ljungberg's agent Claes Elefalk.

"The test results confirmed that he doesn't have a rupture or a strain in his thigh. The muscle strength is totally normal.

"He still has considerable pain in his thigh but it is decreasing. The doctors have found inflammation in the root of a nerve for which he is receiving daily treatment."
