Dean Ashton could be out for as long as a month after breaking down in training.

The United striker, whose career in East London has been blighted by injury injured an ankle at Chadwell Heath during new manager Gianfranco Zola's first session with his squad.

"Unfortunately I’ve picked up another injury and I’m looking at spending the next three to four weeks on the sidelines," Ashton told The Sun.

"I just went over on it. It happens to a lot of players. It’s not too serious but it will take a few weeks to heal properly.

"I’m looking at about three weeks and then it’s the international break. Hopefully I’ll be back after that."

Ashton's injury could mean a rush return for Criag Bellamy, who, despite trianing last week, wasn't considered fit enough to play against West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

With Bobby Zamora having been sold by the club to Fulham, Zola's other option is 32-year-old loan striker David Di Michele, who enjoyed an interesting debut at the Hawthorns after replacing Ashton early in the game.
