Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is reported to have failed in an audacious attempt to land Hammers striker Paul Kitson on loan before the start of the new campaign.

According to reports Allardyce, who is desperately short of front men on the eve of the Football League curtain raisers tomorrow, tried to take Kitson - along with Bradford striker Isaiah Rankin - to the Reebok Stadium on loan.

But the bid was swiftly rejected by the Hammers, who need Kitson as back up following the departure of Paulo Wanchope to Manchester City earlier in the week.

Allardyce is reported to have said: "At this stage, most of the clubs I have tried want to hold on to their players."

Allardyce also had his bid for Rankin rejected by Bradford.
