Irish FA order Lomas medical

The Irish FA have demanded that West Ham send Steve Lomas over for medical examination after the player pulled out of tomorrow nights international friendly.

The move comes following Lomas' telephoned withdrawal from the squad to face Yugoslavia, allegedly made just 15 minutes before the players were due to meet up in Belfast.

The Irish FA were furious, and have demanded that Lomas - plus Leicester's Gerry Taggart and Neil Lennon, who pulled out earlier in the week - travel immediately to Belfast for a thorough examination.

"We have asked the clubs to send their players for local medical examination in accordance with the regulations of FIFA with whom we have been in touch," said David Bowen, general secretary for the Irish Football Association.

"If it is ascertained they are injured, then they will be sent back immediately. If they fail to meet our request, then we will ask the clubs to ensure the players are not available for Saturday and the start of the Premiership.

"This is the first time we've had to invoke this procedure. If players are injured then that is understandable, but in view of the lateness of these withdrawals we had to take some action. Our decision has been communicated to the clubs."

Lomas has been suffering from tendonitis for the past week, and is struggling to be fit in time for Saturday's game at Chelsea.
