Leicester City tried to sign West Ham United winger Morgan Amalfitano as the transfer window drew to a close last night.

The French midfielder, who joined West Ham in a cut-price £1million deal last summer was the subject of a firm bid from the Foxes - an offer that was instantly rejected by West Ham's David Sullivan.

City, who are in deep trouble at the bottom of the Premier League turned to Amalfitano having had an approach for Aaron Lennon rejected by the player (who eventually signed for Everton).

However they were politely informed that West Ham would be unwilling to do business on a player who has been a vital cog in the squad that has propelled United into the upper half of the Premier League.

In the end, the only player Nigel Pearson managed to sign on a frustrating day for Leicester was Robert Huth from Stoke City on loan for the rest of the season.
