Debutant Dimitri Payet gave Hammers fans a tantalising glimps of what is to come when he scored twice before setting up West Ham's winner at Roots Hall this afternoon.
The new signing, making his first appearance in a West Ham shirt today equalised for West Ham with a stunning free kick after Kevan Hurst had given the hosts a 20th-minute lead.He then added a second on the half hour mark to put the Hammers 2-1 ahead with a wonderful curling effort from the edge of the penalty area that gave Southend's highly-rated 'keeper Dan Bentley no chance.
And as if that wasn't enough, Payet then created West Ham's winning goal - after Jack Payne had drawn the Shrimpers level - 11 minutes after the restart, when his cross was turned into his own net from no more than a yard our by Luke Prosser.
A great start for Payet, who scored a brace on his debut
