Wenger on Payet

Arsene Wenger has been eulogising over West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet - on the same day that Arsenal were linked with a move for the French international.

The North London club come up against Payet and his West Ham team mates at the Olympic Satdium this afternoon and are one of a number of clubs being linked with a January move for the Euro 16 star.

And Wenger was particularly keen to talk about Payet's "top talent", whilst insisting that he has monitored his progress throughout his career.

"Payet is one of the star players now in France," he told hte media. "He has fulfilled his potential late in his career.

"He was a top talent, always, but had periods of being up and down. West Ham was one of the triggers for him, not only did he convince last year he is a top class player but he also won his place in the national team."

"I've looked at him many times. I've known him for a long time. He played at Saint-Etienne and we watched him many times.

"I think he has all the attributes to be a top player, which he is, but he's 29-years-old already. He's matured a lot and come back into the national team, which shows he was more consistent."

For perhaps the first time since moving to London, Payet came in for heavy criticism following what some supporters perceived to be a substandard performance in Wednesday's 4-1 EFL Cup defeat at Old Trafford.

However those same fans will be hoping the French star can lead the Hammers to success this evening - even if a January move elsewhere presents a tantalising prospect.
