Bywater in mascot scandal

Those of you who made the trip down to Southampton at the weekend may have seen Hammers keeper Stephen Bywater involved in an 'incident' with the Southampton mascot just before the game.

Tony Fowles from the Ironworks Gazette picked up the story with Stephen yesterday ...

Q: There has been a lot said this week from supporters who were at Southampton about your little incident with the mascot?

SB: Good or bad?

Q: Well to some you are a hero so what actually happened?

SB: Me and Les (Sealey) were waiting for Shaka to come across to do some volleys and the mascot kept pestering us, so I’ve gone across to take a few shots. So he’s taken a few shots and then he has tried to take me on so I thought 'oh yeah'.

So I’ve come out and dived at him and he’s flipped over me and landed on the floor. You know, he tried taking the mick out of me by trying to take me on instead of shooting, so I just came out and clouted him - he’s gone over me, I think he was a bit wet actually because it was soaking.

Q: It was wasn’t it? And did the crowd react to it?

SB: Yeah, there was a big roar, it was great! A couple of players said to me 'what happened with the mascot before the game? Did he fall over or something?' Shaka was laughing actually. But I'm thinking of piling them up now. Has anyone ever knocked over a mascot from every club in the league? It might be great fun.

Q: Thanks for your time Steve.
