Ex-Rev backs statue stay

Local residents of West Ham United's former home have found support in their bid to retain the Champions statue from local councillors and the clergy.

The club and the local community are at loggerheads over the sculpture, which was erected in 2003 and officially unveiled by Prince Andrew.

Whilst West Ham wish to relocate the sculpture closer to their new ground at Stratford, E6 residents are campaigning to keep it at the junction of Green Street and Barking Road.

"There is very strong feeling around here that the statue remains," Councillor Veronica Oakeshott said. "It's not the football club's property. It wasn't their idea to commission it and they paid for less than half of it.

"We're also going to try to have the statue given Listed status and that is supported by local MP Stephen Timms. Even former West Ham stars like Clyde Best don't want it moved."

The residents' campaign received a boost this week when West Ham United's former chaplain, Elwin Cockett, called for the statue to remain in situ.

Replying to a comment by local concillor Jose Alexander backing the campaign, Cockett - now the Archdeacon of West Ham - took to twitter to express his support.

The battle for the statue is set to be concluded this Spring when Newham Council will vote on whether to leave the statue in its current location or send it to Stratford.
