West Ham's first of two games in 24 hours against Werder Bremen ended in defeat thanks to a first half strike from Johannes Eggestein.

The teenage striker scored the only goal of the game with just 12 minutes on the clock to condemn Slaven Bilic's side to their first defeat of pre-season - despite starting with new signings Marko Arnautovic and Pablo Zabaleta.

Although both Joe Hart and Javier Hernandez were on the bench, neither were involved - although both should play some part of this afternoon's second encounter.

Despite the reversal, West Ham assistant manager Nikola Jurcevic was particularly pleased with the efforts of one of two of the younger members of the travelling squad - specifically Declan Rice and Nathan Holland, both of whom started the game.

“Both of them were good today," said Jurcevic. "Not only today, they were good during the training sessions and in some friendly games in Austria with Fulham and Sturm Graz.

"They are young, they are fresh, they have some quality and they have been a really positive surprise in this pre-season camp."
