West Ham have launched a potential club-record bid for Sporting midfielder William Carvalho.

The Hammers have offered €30million for the 25-year-old Portuguese international according to Jason Burt, writing for The Telegraph - a bid that, if accepted, would dwarf the club's current record transfer fee of £24million, paid for Marko Arnautovic just a matter of weeks ago.

Representatives of the club are reported to be in Portugal in order to push the deal through, even though Lisbon are said to be holding out for around €40million - a figure far closer to the £40million release clause in Carvalho's current contract.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic has privately admitted that an additional defensive midfielder - preferably Carvalho - would complete his summer business, in terms of permanent transfers.

Howeverh the club are still likely to bring in an additional recruitment or two via the loan system prior to the closure of the current transfer window, should they manage to move on fringe players such as Soufiane Feghouli and Robert Snodgrass.
