Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed that wantaway star Virgil van Dijk will not feature against West Ham in this weekend's Premier League clash.

The new Saints boss has been without the 26-year-old Dutch central defender since he handed in a transfer request last week - just a year after putting pen to paper on a lucrative six-year contract.

"It's the same situation as last week, nothing has changed," said Pellegrino. "For that reason I have nothing more to say."

Meanwhile West Ham boss Slaven Bilic has warned Pellegrino of the dangers of trying to hang on to a player who wants out - much as Dimitri Payet did last season.

"Of course I have sympathy with other managers," he said. "The most important thing is that you are on the same line as your board - then you are strong.

"At the end of the day it's your problem, because when it finishes you are missing something on the pitch. It's a club problem but at the end of the day, it becomes the manager's problem.

"It's happening now with Coutinho, with Conte and Costa or whoever. We have to live with it and try to find the best possible solution for the club. That is the best possible situation for the manager as well."
