Injured striker Javier Hernandez says he hopes to be back in action for West Ham's first team sooner rather than later.

The Mexican international has been out of contention since injuring a hamstring during the friendly against Belgium at the beginning of the month.

However he is targeting a return to training sometime this week - with the match against City this coming Sunday, or the encounter with Chelsea at the Olympic Stadium six days later (9 December) as a potential return point.

"Hopefully this week I can get involved with the team, we're going to see," he said. "With this type of injury you need to be very careful because it is a hamstring and sometimes the best thing is to [not rush] back.

"Thankfully I'm feeling very good, very fine, and we'll see if I can get involved with the team."

Hernandez signed for the Hammers in a £16million switch from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer. Since then he has scored four goals in 13 first team appearances.
