David Moyes made no excuses for Arthur Masuaku after he was dismissed for spitting at an opponent during West Ham's FA Cup exit at Wigan Athletic.

The 24-year-old was involved in a coming-together with Wigan's Nick Powell four minutes into the second half and, after words were seemingly exchanged, coolly spat in his direction.

Although the incident hadn't initially been spotted by referee Chris Kavanagh, he was soon made aware of it by a wildly-protesting Powell and issued a red card to Masuaku seconds later.

West Ham, who were losing 1-0 at the time due to an early header by Will Grieg, went on to lose 2-0 with Wigan profiting from a penalty-that-never-was later in the half.

And manager Moyes was unequivocal in his condemnation of the former French youth international when asked about Masuaku's appalling act by the media. "Ultimately, what Arthur's done was despicable," he said.

"He will deserve everything he gets and he will get something off us as well. It's unacceptable, totally unacceptable.

"The referee doesn't see it and can't see it, so it was the player's reaction that got him sent off. Ultimately they got the right decision so I can have no qualms about it."

Masuaku has also been widely condemned by West Ham supporters tonight, with some even calling for his departure as a result of the incident.
