I turned down Toure, says Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that he rejected the opportunity to sign Yaya Toure during the summer.

Toure's agent hit out at West Ham this week, stating that the club weren't big enough to sign his client - who, it was later revealed, had agreed to re-join Greek outfit Olympiakos, whom he last represented in 2005.

However Pellegrini accused Toure's Russian agent, Dimitry Seluk, of being economical with the truth when he insisted that he had personally rejected the chance to team up with the former Manchester City midfielder once again.

"The words are the work of Yaya's agent," insisted Pellegrini. "I spoke with him [Toure], I know how I perceive him as a person and as a player - but at the moment we were doing our squad list, that position was covered.

"We needed other players so I explained to Yaya clearly why he could not come here, but I hope he can find a big club. Yaya wanted to stay in England. He also received offers from China, but he wanted to stay here and try to be here [at West Ham].

"Unfortunately as I said, that position here was covered."

Toure's agent claimed earlier in the week that his client has signed a deal with an unnamed London club, leading to much speculation on social media.

However it now appears that his much-decorated client's final destination will be somewhere rather less grand than the English Premier League, where Toure has played since 2010.
