David Gold has backed the decision to award Richard Scudamore a ?5million golden handshake.

West Ham were one of the 15 member clubs to ratify the payment - to which only five objected* - which will result in each Premier League club contributing ?250,000 to Scudamore's parting gift.

And following a league meeting at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms, in London the 82-year-old co-chairman was asked whether he felt that the Premier League's departing executive chairman was deserving of the vast one-off payment.

"It's almost as if you're looking for trouble," retorted Gold. "This is all very appropriate and we're all very pleased."

Whilst the Premier League chairman may well be content with the outcome, the decision to award Scudamore the pay-off met with a storm of protest from all corners of the footballing community.

And none more so than from those who are campaigning to raise ?600,000 to send four-year-old Isla Caton to the USA for potentially life-saving treatment.

* The five Premier League clubs that voted against the decision to award Scudamore's controversial pay-off were Leicester, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Huddersfield and Burnley.
