Oh, Billy Billy

The East Stand of the Olympic Stadium is set to be renamed the Billy Bonds Stand in honour of the club's former captain and manager.

A ceremony will be staged on Saturday, 2 March prior to the Premier League clash with Newcastle Utd to formerly introduce the renamed side of the bowl-shaped ground, which has a capacity of around 20,000.

ďI have so many great memories of this club and this really is the icing on the cake. Itís a great honour and means so much to me and my family", the Hammers legend said. "I am very lucky Ė I have had such great support at this club over the years. The fans have always been great to me, from day one.

"To think that I am only the third West Ham player to receive this honour after Bobby Moore and Trevor Brooking; you canít get better than that. Two people that I admire, two great footballers, and two great friends.

"It is going to be a special day on 2 March. I am really looking forward to it and it will be lovely for my family. I have two daughters and two granddaughters, and they canít wait to come to London Stadium to see it.

ďIím getting on a bit now, into my 70s, but it will be great Ė when Iím no longer around Ė for my granddaughters to come here and say ĎThatís Grandadís standí. That will be lovely."

The news represents a complete change of heart by West Ham who had previously refused earlier requests to rename the East Stand of the Boleyn Ground for the final season in Upton Park.
