West Ham remain in 'best brands' top 20

West Ham Utd have risen above RB Leipzig but fallen below Milan, Roma and Newcastle Utd in the 2019 Brand Finance Football 50.

The index, which charts the most valuable brand names in world football saw the Hammers drop from 18th to 20th this year, following a season in which the club ended the year in 10th place in the Premier League.

However there was slightly better news for the club with regards to the Strongest Football Brands Index, which saw West Ham rise from 26th to 24th place passing Scottish champions Celtic and Serie A's Napoli.

Spanish giants Real Madrid are once again considered the world's strongest football brand, with the club enjoying the highest enterprise value in the world of football whilst the Bernabeu Stadium tops stadia performance ranking.

And the Premier League is the most widely-followed national competition across key European markets, as English clubs dominate the ranking with 17 entrants (the Bundesliga follows with 13 clubs).

Wolverhampton Wanderers - who ended the 2018/19 campaign 7th in the Premier League and therefore qualified for the Europa League next season - are the most valuable new entrant to the Brand Finance Football 50 this year, ranked 28th and above established clubs such as Ajax and Seville.

The Brand Finance team utilise numerous football-related metrics - including league perception, squad value, brand strength and global reach - in order to determine the order of their indexes.

Upon moving West Ham United FC from its Upton Park home to Stratford in 2016, vice chair Karren Brady insisted that the move was "crucial" to the future success of the club.

"The Olympic Stadium had been built less than a mile away from us and we saw that as a real opportunity to change the brand values of the club," she said at the time. "There was a plan to plug the debt, build the future and create the culture.

"Rebranding ourselves was really important with our stadium. We added the word London to our crest because we felt it had real global appeal. Nobody else does it.

"We are in the heart of London, in the foothills of the financial sector. We have the best stadium - there are some great stadiums in this country but there is only one Olympic Stadium and it's ours. It's really had a dynamic impact on the things we can do."
