West Ham United have completed the capture of young central defender Goncalo Cardoso from Boavista.

The 18-year-old Portuguese defender moves to West Ham for a fee in the region of €3million (equivalent to £2.76million at current exchange rates), and becomes Manuel Pellegrini's fifth signing of a busy summer.

Speaking to whufc.com upon confirmation of his arrival, the youngster - who is expected to challenge for a spot in the first team squad - admitted that he was excited about potentially playing in the Premier League.

"It’s a dream come true," he said. "I always dreamt of coming to England and now I’m here at this big, historic club, so I’m very happy.

"I’m an aggressive player, a little bit different on the pitch than off it. I’m calm, and I like to have the ball and build the game from the back. I’m here to work and to help the team reach their goals."

Meanwhile Director of Football Mario Husillos added: "We are very pleased to welcome Goncalo to West Ham United. He is a young player at the very beginning of his career, having made the breakthrough to senior football with Boavista only last season.

Our scouts in Portugal have watched his development very closely for some time now and we are very happy to have secured his transfer. He has made excellent progress at both club and international level, playing for Portugal in the European Under-19 Championship final this summer.

"He is of course a player for the future, with a lot of potential in front of him, but we feel he is ready to be with the first team squad from both a physical and technical point of view."

Cardozo, who has represented his country regularly at Under 19 level made his first team debut for Boavista against Desportivo das Aces in October last year, three weeks before his 18th birthday.

He went on to make 15 appearances for his club during the 2018/19 campaign, during which he picked up five yellow cards and a red card during a 1-0 defeat at Braga back in January.

Cardoso becomes West Ham's fifth signing of the summer transfer window following the arrival of Sebastien Haller, Pablo Fornals and goalkeepers Roberto and David Martin.
