The 30-year-old striker was given a free transfer by West Ham at the end of the 2018/19 season follwing a seven-year stint at the club, since when he has been unable to find a new club.

However according to various sources on transfer deadline day, the perma-crock is in descussions with his former club about what would be an emotional return to the North East.

Carroll left Newcastle eight-and-a-half years ago when he joined Liverpool in what was at the time a record £35million transfer fee.

However within 18 months he was on his way to West Ham on a season-long loan - a deal that became a permanent transfer a year later when West ham paid £17million to sign him from the Merseysides.

"I’m told Andy Carroll to NUFC is more likely to happen than not & player desperate to rejoin hometown club," wrote Craig Hope for The Mail.
