Underestimate us at your peril

Newport County goalkeeper Nick Townsend has sent out a stark warning to West Ham United's Premier League stars.

The League Two side host the Hammers in this evening's Carabao Cup second round tie at Rodney Parade and go into the match unbeaten so far this season, having won two and drawn three of their opening five EFL fixtures.

And Townsend, who has conceded just two goals in the league so far this season has told Manuel Pellegrini's side that they are in for a stern test this evening when they visit the 7,850-capacity ground.

"I don't think any team is going to underestimate us," he told newport-county.co.uk. "Any team that comes here knows they will be in for a game.

"We've just got to play our own game and focus on how we play and try and get another scalp.

"Hopefully it's the first game on TV that we are going to have here [this season]. It's massive for the club, it's putting Newport on the map, which is great for everyone. It brings everyone together."

And Townsend believes the home crowd - which will number in excess of 5,000 noisy Welsh fans - also have a big part to play once the game kicks off at 7.45pm tonight.

"The crowd that do come support us all the way to the death, it's great," he added. "They give you that boost that you need."

Whilst County have themselves scored just four times in their opening five League Two fixtures, the 24-year-old 'keeper believes they have what it takes to emulate AFC Wimbledon's shock defeat of West Ham in last year's FA Cup fourth round.

"I think we are a good footballing team, we play a lot of good football and I don't think we get the recognition for it," he asserted.

"Everyone says we're a long-ball team but we're definitely not. We can do both. We've played a lot of good football this season and last season.

"It'll be great to show what we can do as a club and as a group of players [against West Ham tonight]."
