We tried to warn Arthur, says Pellegrini

Manuel Pellegrini has revealed that he warned his players about making any rash challenges during the half time team talk.

Arthur Masuaku was dismissed by Mike Dean after 67 minutes of tonight's 0-0 draw after being issued with a second yellow charge for a late - yet genuine - challenge on Villa sub Ahmed Elmohamady, who hardly helped the defender's case by rolling around theatrically as a result.

And Pellegrini admitted during his post-match press conference that he had warned the defender of the consequences of making another mistimed challenge having already been cautioned.

"They tried to do it with the pressure of the fans," said the manager. "They tried to do it with Mark Noble in the first-half, they try to get a second yellow. We talked about it at half-time; we told him he must be careful."

Despite Masuaku's dismissal West Ham were able to extend their unbeaten run away from home to four matches by seeing out a goalless draw - which the boss, who is celebrating his 66th birthday, insisted was a decent result.

"I think that we produced a good performance," added Pellegrini. "Firstly because we came here and we tried to win. With ten men we continued trying to have the ball and to win the game.

"We didn't just defend so I'm very happy with a lot of things tonight. I don't know if we played better with ten men, but the important thing was that it didn't seem like we had ten players.

"We defended very well and we had the personality to come here and try to win from the first minute. We couldn't do that, but it's a good result with ten men ."
