Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Aaron Cresswell will return to the first team squad in the wake of Arthur Masuaku's dismissal against Aston Villa on Monday night.

With the French-born full back set to begin his suspension this weekend, Cresswell is poised to return to the starting XI for the first time since the Carabao Cup win at Newport County.

And it will be the 29-year-old's second Premier League appearance of the campaign, having previously featured in the 5-0 defeat against Manchester City on the opening day of the season - after which he was dropped.

"Of course [it will be] Aaron Cresswell," said Pellegrini during his pre-match press conference on Friday. He started the season and played last season with me. He played 50 per cent of the games.

"For a manager, the best performances come from players when they have competition behind them. Aaron wasn't playing because Arthur was playing well, but now he has the chance to show his ability."

Although some supporters had called for Academy star Ben Johnson to be recalled in place of Masuaku, Pellegrini has opted to reply on experience in the shape of Cresswell.

The Liverpudlian defender has featured on 181 occasions for West ham since moving from Ipswich in 2014 in a ?3.7million transfer.
