Ex-Hammer stars in United success [video]

Alessandro Diamanti's new club secured a win in their first ever A-League fixture when beating Wellington Phoenix by one goal to nil.

The former Hammers midfielder, now 36, captained the recently-formed Western United to a single goal victory against the New Zealanders, who West Ham played in a pre-season friendly back in July 2014.

The only goal of the game at the Wellinton Regional Stadium came from Besart Berisha, who at 34 is the A-League's all-time leading goalscorer (the vast majority of his goals having been scored for Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory).

Diamanti signed a five-year contract with West Ham in August 2009, becoming the club's 800th professional player. At the end of the campaign he was named runner-up Hammer of the Year and crowned KUMB's Best Signing of the 2009/10 season.

During his one and only full season at the Boleyn, the Italian scored a total of eight goals with five coming from the penalty spot - including his first ever goal for West Ham against Liverpool.

However the former Livorno player he was on his way back to his home nation in August 2010 after West Ham agreed a ?1.8m fee with Brescia.

Since then, Diamanti has enjoyed spells with Bologna, Guangzhou Evergrande, Palermo, Perugia and Livorno - plus Fiorentina, Watford and Atalanta on loan - before he joined the Australian club earlier this year.

Upon signing an one-season contract for the newly-inaugurated Western United in July, Diamanti was made club captain by manager Mark Rudan - before beginning his latest venture in perfect style at the weekend.
