Declan Rice could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being benched for England's 6-0 win in Bulgaria on Monday night, says a former England striker.

Ex-international Darren Bent, who turned down a ?16million move to West Ham 12 years ago when still a Charlton player believes that the 20-year-old is unlikely to feature in Gareth Southgate's plans for the immediate future.

Even though Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is suspended for England's next outing against Montenegro in November, Bent maintains that Rice may well have to get used to a place on the bench once again.

"I'm not quite sure he'll play because there's no point playing him and [Tottenham midfielder] Harry Winks," he told Football Insider.

"You put Winks in there, Ross Barkley just scored two so he might be in there - and then you've Mason Mount. Rice might have to sit on the bench because there's no point playing those two [together].

"It's not like they're going to be playing a team who are going to be up on the front foot and they might want to shore up the back four, so I think Winks will play."

Rice, who was recently named as KUMB's Player of the Month for September was one of several England players heavily criticised by pundits and media commentators following England's 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic last Friday.

Having made his international debut for the Three Lions in March in a 5-0 win over the Czechs, the Hammers midfielder has gone on to make six appearances for Gareth Southgate's England in total.
