West Ham's Women's team fell to their third defeat of the campaign despite taking the lead against Chelsea.

Goalless at the break, substitute Adriana Leon's 58th-minute striker gave the Hammers hope of securing what would've been a third Women's Super League win of the 20-19/20 season.

However the scores were levelled 12 minutes later by Sophie Ingle before efforts from Ji So-Yun (72 minutes) and Drew Spence, in added-on time, secured victory for the visitors.

"Going 1-0 up was really great for us," goalscorer Leon told whufc.com. "Unfortunately we weren't able to keep the lead. We had some good spells in play, and we have lots to build on from that.

"We have to learn how to keep a lead, that's the biggest lesson, but we'll learn from it and get better for the next one."

Despite the defeat head coach Matt Beard, whilst naturally disappointed with a result that leaves the Hammers 7th in the 12-team league table, insisted that there were still positives to take from the game.

"Chelsea started better and it took us a while to settle into the game," he admitted. "But after probably the first fifteen or twenty minutes we grew into it, we did really well, and we created some good chances.

"I think we deservedly went in front but we did need to do better for their first two goals. The first one's a little bit difficult because it was a good finish, but with Ji's, we definitely could have got out and blocked the shot.

"We've had a tough week. We've had flu in the camp and had two or three players break down injury-wise, which meant we've had to make changes again.

"Not taking our chances when we should be has been our Achilles heel this season. Teams like Chelsea, if you give them opportunities they'll take them. That was the difference."

The win at Rush Green sent Chelsea to the top of the table, with 13 points from their opening five games.
