Andy Carroll's chances of making his first start for Newcastle since returning to the North East during the summer are looking slim after failing to recover from a groin problem.

The Magpies travel to London this weekend where they will provide West Ham United's next Premier League opponents. However they are likely to be without the former England striker who spent six years as a Hammer before leaving on a free transfer at the end of last season.

Carroll has made just four substitute appearances for Steve Bruce's side this season and was pulled out of the team that drew 1-1 with Wolves on Sunday 72 hours before the game.

It was hoped that his omission would allow him to recuperate in time for this Saturday's meeting in Stratford. However reports from Newcastle suggest that the 30-year-old remains no closer to being declared fit.

Meanwhile it has been revealed that Stuart Attwell will referee the latest meeting between the two teams. The Warwickshire-based official became the youngest referee to officiate a Premier League fixture in 2008 when aged just 25.

He most recently took a West Ham game when the Hammers drew 2-2 against Bournemouth at Dean Court last month. He will be joined by assistants Neil Davies and Richard West.

Meanwhile Alan Young has been named as fourth official, while Jarred Gillett and Ian Hussin will be on VAR duty at Stockley Park.
