Pellegrini urges players to take responsibility

Manuel Pellegrini has claimed that results are largely determined by the performances of the players - not tactical choices or decisions.

Under extreme pressure following West Ham's home defeat against Arsenal on Monday night, the Chilean boss insisted today that he is mostly helpless once the teams enter the field of play.

Answering a question regarding how to get the best out of the under-performing Sebastian Haller and Felipe Anderson, Pellegrini replied: "I always think as a manager that the results of the team depends on the individual performance of a player.

"After that you can work a lot on tactical, physical and technical work - but the players decide the games.

"When your important players are not playing at their best, the team's results won't be good.

"So you must find out why they are not playing well, work with them and give them confidence. I hope that most of the players will return to their normal performance levels as soon as possible."

And Pellegrini - whose team face fellow strugglers Southampton this weekend - reiterated his previously-expressed view that West Ham had not quite got what they deserved from some of their recent Premier League outings.

"Perhaps we played badly against Everton and Burnley and if we continued to play all of our games in the same way I would be more worried," he added.

"But in other games we've not had the results we deserved. Against Crystal Palace and Sheffield Utd, for example, we demonstrated we can be a consistent team.

"We all know we need a result [at Southampton] as we have just five points from the last nine games in the league. We need to be solid and consistent like we were against Chelsea and for 60 minutes against Arsenal."
