It was "a tough result to take" according to Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl, after the relegation favourites succumbed to a 1-0 defeat at home to Manuel Pellegrini's West Ham.

Sebastian Haller's first half goal was enough to win West Ham all three points at St Mary's in what was United's last outing before Christmas.

And although the Hammers had a Michail Antonio strike ruled out and a fairly clear penalty not given, the Saints boss maintained that his side were unfortunate not to take anything from the game.

"It was a tough result, because I think in the second half we played much better," said Hasenhüttl. "Although it was very difficult in the first half.

"It was difficult to defend against all the long balls against a physical and strong opponent, but we had a few very good chances in the second half.

"Ingsy was unlucky today with two good finishes. There was a foul against Moussa [Djenepo] in the run up to his goal - and that probably sums up the whole game.

"We had the chance to turn the tables but we didn't, so it's normal that we are disappointed. It's a pity that we haven't taken anything [from the game]."
