David Moyes' preparations for this Friday's trip to Sheffield United have been rocked by the news that Ryan Fredericks is unlikely to return to action before the end of the month.

The right-sided defender pulled up towards the end of the first half during yesterday's 2-0 win at Gillingham with a hamstring strain and was immediately replaced by Pablo Zabaleta.

Fredericks could potentially be out of action for up to a month

Following a scan on Monday morning it was been revealed that 27-year-old, who was playing at wing back in David Moyes' reshuffled formation had damaged a thigh muscle.

And as a result, he is unlikely to be in a position to play until the end of January or beginning of February.

"Ryan injured his hamstring while chasing back late in the first half and was assessed immediately before undergoing a scan," Head of Medical Richard Collinge told West Ham's website.

"He will now begin a period of rehabilitation and recovery, with the plan being to return to action before the end of February."

Consequently Fredericks is likely to miss the trip to Sheffield United on Friday (10 January), the next home match against Everton on Saturday, 18 January and the trip to Leicester, on Wednesday 22 January.

West Ham's next game after that will be the home match with runaway league leaders Liverpool at the LOS on Wednesday, 29 January.

Should Fredericks not recover in time for that one either, he could be in line for a return against Brighton & Hove Albion, also at the LOS, on Saturday 1 February.
