Stay classy, urge supporters group

Supporters group Hammers United have urged angry fans to show restraint despite West Ham's defeat in the FA Cup against a second string West Bromwich Albion.

Disappointed fans took to social media in their droves following United's defeat to the Championship side, who rested several first team players, urging the group to back direct action against the club's board.

But as has been the case since their campaign began, Hammers United insisted that peaceful protest remains the best and most efficient way of effecting long-term change at the club.

A plea for calm

In addition to their next planned protest, scheduled for Saturday 29 February, the group have called for a show of defiance by the fans when West Ham visit Anfield on Monday, 24 February.

"There is so much frustration, tension and anger in the West Ham fan base at the moment, and rightly so," said the group in a statement on their website.

"We propose that we make a momentous show of strength at the Liverpool away match. It is on Sky and all the world will be watching. We suggest the teams come out to a sea of black balloons at the West Ham end.

"Then our fans need to display banners, hundreds of them, more banners than in the Kop. We need a chant to show we are backing the team, not the board.

"We think the chant should be the one that those of us lucky enough to have been at Villa Park on that fateful day [the FA Cup semi final against Nottingham Forest in 1991] will never forget."

There are fears that fans' anger will spill over inside the LOS once again

Despite Hammers United's best efforts, there is real fear that trouble will erupt inside the stadium before long should West Ham's form fail to improve sharply.

And it is thought that a repeat of the scenes from March 2018, when hundreds of supporters gathered in front of the directors' box to protest against the board's running of the club, could be on the cards.
