David Moyes thinks forgotten man Jack Wilshere could still play a part in West Ham's season - even though more than four months have passed since his last first team appearance.

The former England midfielder, who celebrated his 28th birthday on New Year's Day, had been written off by many fans having been sidelined since mid-October.

Yet according to Moyes, Wilshere is on the road to recovery and could feature in West Ham's final few matches of the season - a period in which the Hammers need every point they can muster to avoid relegation.

" Jack has started some work on the grass after his operation," Moyes revealed during his Friday press conference. "Both he and Andriy Yarmolenko are getting a bit closer to fitness, but are still a little bit away.

"I hope he's going to play again this season. I hope he'll be fit to do so, but can't guarantee that."

With regards to the Ukrainian international, who has been sidelined since before Christmas, Moyes added: "He played sixty minutes in a practice game the other day but is still feeling his thigh a little bit.

"He's not joined back in with the first team yet, but he is getting closer.

And the manager also admitted that even though he was ably replaced by Pablo Fornals at Liverpool on Monday, West Ham will also miss new signing Tomas Soucek, who limped off just two minutes into the second half.

"Tomas is a big miss," admitted Moyes. "He has come in and hit the ground running. He has contributed in a different way. We're disappointed and we're going to miss him."

Meanwhile West Ham's other injured first team squad member, Ryan Fredericks, has pencilled in an April return having undergone surgery in the week to correct shoulder damage sustained during the Manchester City outing.
