West Ham have confirmed they will not be one of the Premier League clubs to furlough either their part or full time non-playing staff.

Five Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Tottenham have come under fire within the last 48 hours for asking the taxpayer to fund the wages of their employees during the current Covid-19 crisis.

But West Ham will not be joining them according to vice chair Karren Brady, who confirmed on Saturday that the club will continue to pay its staff.

"For your information all staff at West Ham United, full and part time have been paid 100 per cent of their wages," she confirmed via social media. "Ensuring everyone is safe and looked after is our most important priority."

According to the club's most recent accounts, released back in January, West Ham employ 220 part-time staff- up from 143 the previous year (an increase of 54 per cent).

A further 212 commercial and administrative staff are employed on a full time basis.

Liverpool announced on Friday they were the fifth Premier League club to claim 80 per cent of non-playing staff wages from the government’s furlough scheme, following Newcastle, Tottenham, Norwich and Bournemouth.

The Merseyside club enjoyed a turnover of £533million for the 2018/19 financial year and recorded a pre-tax profit of £125million - a world record for a football club.
