If relegation stays, we don't play

It is believed that most teams in the bottom half of the Premier League are against plans to complete the season at neutral venues.

While all 20 member clubs are said to be in favour of resuming the season in order to play the outstanding 92 fixtures, around half will only agree to do so if the threat of relegation is removed from the equation according to reports.

A meeting will take place later today (Monday) at which the clubs are likely to be warned of the consequences of not finishing the 2019/20 season, which is looking more and more likely the longer the saga continues.

Yet several clubs - of which West Ham are said to be one - will refuse to go along with the plans if relegation remains on the table.

While on the one hand refusing to play in such circumstances would appear to be incredible convenient for clubs still in contention for the drop, the argument is a fair one given that clubs can no longer rely on home advantage to give their teams the edge in certain fixtures.

Meanwhile the players themselves, several of whom have raised objections to playing again this season are to be told that featuring in training and matches is entirely safe.

Even though a Brighton & Hove Albion player was confirmed as having contracted the virus during the weekend, 'Project Restart' - the name given for the Premier League's plan to resume top flight football - will insist that players will be safe due to the many precautions and safety guidelines being put in place.

Still, four club doctors are understood to have raised their own personal concerns with the League last week regarding safety issues.
